x 4.2 cm silver insignia embossed with a eagle over a St. Andrew's cross and thistle motif with Union shield and scroll
inscribed "79th N. G. S. N. Y." Reverse engraved "Capt. P. M. Grant / "F." Comp. 79th Regt. / Highlanders, N. Y."
Has an unusual attachment pin and sleeve which may not be complete. A casual search of the Civil War roster of
regimental officers did not show Capt. Grant serving at the time the regiment was mustered out of federal service. He
may have been an enlisted man who moved up in the ranks during the post war reorganization of the unit. His service
could not have been long as the regiment was disbanded in 1876 as part of down sizing of New York's National Guard.
An attractive and detailed insignia with a provenance that invites further research. II

Pattern of 1885 cavalry carbine boot for the M1877 carbine fitted with any one of six possible rear sights or the
M1884 carbine. Leather is pliable and retains 90% of original finish. Back has faint stamp, "ROCK ISLAND /
ARSENAL". This one suffers from the ill effects of so-called leather 'preservative', and is priced accordingly. II-

Model 1860 Staff & Field sword has 75.5 cm double-edged straight blade with gray age patina and blunted tip, acid-etch
martial panoply with script "Monte Pio Guards" designation. Ricasso has "Dan Hall Clothing Co. Boston" retailer's
marking. Hilt has clamshell guard and pommel both cast with US eagle motifs, leather covered grip with wire wrap
cord intact. Has steel scabbard with traces of nickel finish and light surface oxidation throughout. Scabbard lacks
throat fitting. The Monte Pio Guards was a very small late 19th Century private military company, essentially a
society militia, based in New Bedford. One of the few references that I could find mentions that 32 of their members
participated in the ceremony dedicating a monument to Christopher Columbus in Boston in 1892. As far as I can tell,
long speeches and bad funnel cake were the biggest dangers these guys ever faced. Post-Civil War production M.1860
Staff & Field Swords have to be pretty special to warrant a second look from most collectors.. but finding one etched
to one of these tiny late 19th Century militias makes it a bit more unique and worthy of consideration. II-

90.5
cm overall, with 73.5cm double-edged diminutive blade in good polish, with acid-etched decorative scrollwork and
"
US" fading but still visible. Hilt has folding guard, cast with US national eagle patriotic motifs, and nice condition
gray sharkskin grip with wire wrap intact. Has nickel finished scabbard with brass fittings. Brass on the sword hilt and
scabbard all has a nice mellow patina. No visible maker markings. The M1860 Staff & Field is certainly nobody's first
weapon of choice for the zombocalypse, but it is emblematic of the trend for most swords in this era to be less a tool
of battle and more so an emblem of rank. For your late Indian Wars / Spanish-American War officer's display, this
will do just fine. Till the zombies rise. Then you're just screwed. II

strong color. A particularly nice example. II+
