British Boer War Era Cavalry Trooper's Sword
E122
A short-lived pattern, replaced in 1897 by what was essentially the same sword, but with a turndown edge on the guard
to protect the officer's uniform from excessive wear. Fullered blade in good polish has light gray age patina, acid-etch
scrollwork on both panels including cypher on one side and the Royal coat of arms on the other. Ricasso has proof
mark, no visible maker's marking. Large pierced basket hilt has oxidized patina blending with the approximately 50%
matte nickel finish that remains, with Victoria (1837-1901) monogram in the guard. Hilt has ridged ferrule, checkered
backstrap, and retains 90% of the gray sharkskin covering on the grip with wire wrap intact. Pommel has a simple ball
finial. 98cm overall, with 82.5cm straight, spear-point blade. Includes scabbard with worn but good brown leather
covering and attachment frog, one strap partially broken. Still a good sword - would be a better sword without the
oxidized patina on the hilt, but it has the advantages of being inexpensive due to it's condition and it is somewhat
scarce, as this pattern was in the shops for less than two full years. III+
