cm overall, with 80cm slightly curved blade, 3.5cm wide at the ricasso. Differentiating it from the very similar
earlier models, this sword has one side completely flat, and the other with a broad fuller. Blade has bright finish with a
few age blemishes and several small spots of surface rust. Ricasso has "WEYERSBERG, KIRSCHBAUM & CO.
SOLINGEN" maker's stamp, indicating manufacture after 1883. A gray leather scabbard washer is installed, clearly a
handmade replacement for the red wool felt washer that was prescribed for this sword. Hilt has pierced steel basket
guard with floral scrollwork, iron band and dove's head pommel, with gray sharkskin covered grip and wire wrap intact.
Hilt has dark brown patina on the backstrap and pommel, patina on the basket guard where the nickel finish has worn
away. Steel scabbard also has bright nickel finish, age spots and light surface rust spots throughout. This pattern sword
came about in 1869 when the Austrian Empire reorganized it's military, and attempted to dispense with heavy and
light cavalry distinctions. The sword featured a broad blade, but was not to exceed the weight of the M.1861 light
cavalry saber. An interesting sword from a turning point in the development of Austria's cavalry. II-

Side-mounted periscope for the M95 rifle and carbine, lacks the metal mounting bracket. The periscope was to mount
to a vertical post protruding from an attachment ring. Periscope is 13cm long, retains 75% field gray painted finish
and an oval Vienna maker's stamp "PATENT ANG. / KAUCIC / SCHIESSPEBISCOP." The concept was to allow a
rifleman to clearly see his weapon's sights while remaining safely behind cover, most notably the metal 'trench shield'.
The soldier can properly gain a sight picture and function the weapon without the need to square himself up directly
behind the one open hole in in the shield. Several varieties of these horizontal periscopes are illustrated in the
(
Italian) reference on the Isonso front. Mirrors have a little age spotting but are still functional. Great trench warfare
item! II
