The U.S. Army used heavily modified, non-firing .45/70 rifles for bayonet training. The overall length of this example
is about 43" with 24" barrel fitted with two screws near the muzzle for attaching the fencing bayonet. Gorgeous 1889
cartouche on stock opposite hammerless lockplate. The bayonet was manufactured at Rock Island Arsenal in 1914.
The hilt has dual muzzle rings that secure to the rifle's barrel via two small screws (missing). The blade is made of

Inert 105 pound demolition bomb has hollow interior cast steel nose welded to pressed sheet steel rear section with
guidance fins and transportation plug in the fuse opening. 120cm / 47" overall length. Topside has bracket for the
Mark IX-A release mechanism, 'D-ring' portion missing. Retains 50% original brown painted finish blending with a
dark age patina. The fin mechanism is loose, missing the four small nuts and bolts that hold the assembly to the
brackets attached to the side of the bomb. Very easy to replace with old hardware from your workshop. Body has a
good portion of the original stenciled markings intact, also. II

which is theorized to indicate canteens made in 1916. Cup is inscribed with unit markings "71 / HQ / 257". Has khaki
canvas and web cover with lift-the-dot fasteners, marked with "U.S." stencil on the front, and "R.I.A. / 1918" on the
interior flap. Has faint inscription on the front, may be an old surplus store price. Leather strap assembly remains in
good pliable condition and is Pecard-free. Base has attachment thong threaded through the strap. Normal light wear
and stains. II

Includes several scarce ones; M1910 mess kit has "U.S. / R.I.A. / 1910" date stamp; 1918 pattern 'deep dish' mess kit is
marked with initial and service number of a soldier who carried it in WWII, as are the WWII issue knife, fork, and
spoon set that is included along with his single ID tag. Lot also includes a nice example of the French-made 1918
pattern US mess kit; and a 1917 dated example of the M1910 mess kit marked to an officer in the 811th Aero
Squadron. The early dated M1910 and French-Made kits are nice finds, and all are in good condition. II

Early 20th Century - WWI Mess Kits: Collector's Lot of Four

Though late production, this is the early style with sliding keeper at the point of the 'X' in back, bronze hook
attachments and slide buckles. Light olive drab web, well-marked with "RUSSELL" oval maker's stamp and 1918 date
on one side of the straps. One side has large stenciled artillery crossed cannon with "HQ" above, and "C.A.C." off to
one side. Shows wear and use, but remains a good solid set. II

cm diameter x 2cm thick folding Engineer compass is brass with blackened finish, has flip-up sight mechanism and
dial caging latch, nicely marked "U.S. ENGINEER CORPS" on the top, with accountability number and "C-E" maker's
stamp on the base. None of the dampening liquid (no pun intended) remains, but when uncaged the dial functions
properly and the 'North' arrow appears to point in the general direction of Canada. Includes French made brown
leather carrier for this pattern compass. II
