French WWI Medal Lot

Created in 1937, this medal was given to veterans of the two tumultuous Marne struggles of September 1914 and July
to August 1918. Like the many other French WW1 battle/campaign commemoratives, the medal is unofficial. The
bronze, 32mm diameter planchet depicts the head and shoulders of Jeanne d'Arc holding a sword with the inscription
"
LA MARNE" with the flags of the allied countries in the background. The reverse has a wreath containing the
inscription "1914 / SOLDAT / DE LA MARNE / 1918. Panchet is suspended from the correct-but badly faded-green
ribbon with three white bordered red stripes, II-

FEVRIER 1916" clasp on worn ribbon. Second has silvered planchet depicting a resolved Poilu, also with unmounted
ribbon. Also includes a bonus: small silver patriotic planchet with female figure on obverse and advancing troops on

French WWI Verdun Unofficial Commemorative Medal Lot

Brigadier General's kepi with red wool crown trimmed in gold braid and quatrefoil, and black band richly embroidered in
a gold bullion oak leaf and acorn motif. Has a bound black leather visor. Lined in black silk with a leather sweatband.
A paper maker's label in the cap (but not attached) names the kepi to "J. Tournes" with the date "21. 3. 30." Has two
small moth holes on the crown, the finish on the underside of the visor shows wear and the sweatband is cracked and
broken at the rear of the cap. There was a General Rene Tournes who was at one time in the 1930s the French
military attache to the embassy in Berlin, and who wrote a number of articles on the coming war with Germany. II

Similar to the Croix de Guerre, this medal was created in 1921 to award members of the French Forces who were
mentioned in dispatches during the post war period and service outside of France. Housed in original cardboard box. II

Insigne du Blessé Civils; non-combatant version with white enamel star on gilted brass planchet. Nice example
complete with original ribbon and prong pin mounting. The ribbon was instituted in WWI, but the medal is a private
purchase article, not furnished by the government. This example is likely a more recent strike, for WWII wounded.

Awarded to all who had participated in the war to secure Finland's independence, the Finnish 1918 Commemorative
Medal for the War of Liberation was instituted on September 10, 1918 The obverse of the iron planchet shows the
Finnish arms, a crowned rampant lion standing on a curved sword and holding a broken sword in its raised paw.
Hallmark for Sporrong and Co. from Sweden is stamped near the bottom. The reverse shows the Cross of Liberty with
an armored arm holding a sword in the upper quadrants and "1918" in the lower. Ribbon is not correct, but the one
that was with the medal when we acquired it, II

Regulation white cotton collarless pullover shirt with pleated placket front, stamped with a black "3" size mark on the
interior rear tail. Has some soiling along fold lines from long storage. Other items include a white cotton cravat, blue,
red and white check handkerchief, two pairs of gray-green knit wool trigger finger mittens, a gray-green knit wool
Balaclava, gray knit socks and a gray canvas clothing bag. All items are regulation pattern and WWI issue. Italian
personal effects from the Great War are almost never encountered and will fill an important gap in any WWI Italian
display.

Italian WWI Enlisted Issue Cotton Shirt and Personal Accessory Lot

Bronze medal commemorating the famous capture of the town and district of Fiume by the irredentists forces under
the command of the colorful Italian hero Gabriele d'Annunzio, leader of the early Italian Nationalists to reclaim the
territory denied them when the British and French betrayed their Italian allies after the Armistice. D'Annunzio and his
men embodied the bold activist spirit of this and later Italian Nationalists and were the first to popularize the Roman
salute, later adopted by the fascisti. Medal is complete with original unmounted ribbon that has a staple visible on the
obverse and paper residue on the reverse where it was once mounted in a collector's album. II
